One of the most popular attractions of Cherokee County is are our daring motorcycle rides. Every year thousands of riders flock to the county to ride through some of our curvy mountain roads. Whether you are wanting to take a joy ride on one of our scenic roads or get a rush from riding on “The Tail of the Dragon,” North Carolina is full of roads and trails for motorcycle enthusiasts. Whatever your speed, we’ve got a trail that will fit.
A couple of the most popular trails for motorcyclists are Deal’s Gap, Wayah Road and Cherohala Skyway. Deal’s Gap is known as “The Tail of the Dragon” because it has over 300 curves in just eleven miles. Wayah Road takes you around the Nantahala National Forest, which makes it a great trail to hit if you’re looking for more of a scenic ride. The Cherohala Skyway is easily one of the most beautiful routes in the country. At around 40 miles long, the road takes you through both the Cherokee National Forest and the Nantahala National Forest. This winding road takes you up and through mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee and hits elevations of up to 5,400 feet. This is one drive you don’t want to miss.
A lesser known ride begins in the seat of Cherokee County, Murphy, and follows along the scenic Hiwassee Lake. Beginning in downtown Murphy you take Joe Brown Highway on a 50-mile loop that goes completely around the forested Hiwassee Reservoir, past the communities of Hanging Dog, Unaka, and Hiwassee Dam. The ride takes you over the TVA dam where picnic tables are available to rest and take in the mountain/lake view! The loop ends back in downtown Murphy, NC.
